Description: Research on stem cells, including both embryonic and adult stem cells, has already led to significant advances in our understanding of the basic biology of renewal, repair and cell differentiation. How one can use stem cells as tools for drug discovery and to uncover the root causes of degenerative disease will be illustrated with examples in metabolic and neurological disease. The scientific challenges and technological advances in this fast moving field will be discussed as will the attendant political and ethical issues surrounding stem cell science.
